41st World Chess Olympiad : Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka 3-1

Bangladesh chess team defeated Sri Lanka 3-1 in the ninth round of the ongoing World Chess Olympiad in Norway yesterday.

The Bangladeshi team which included three Grand Masters (GM), was strong favourites to win the round, but, FIDE Master (FM) Prasanna Kurukulasuriya and the Sri Lankan captain Chinthaka Anurudda sneaked in with two consolations draws against GM, Enamul Hossain and GM, Al Rakib Abdulla on board one and two respectively.

Chamika Perera and the national chess champion Isuru Alahakoon were beaten by International Master (IM), Ahmed Minhazuddin and Niaz Murshed on board three and four.

The Sri Lankan women’s team meanwhile recorded a 3-1 win over South Korea in the ninth round with points from Yashora Tiumi, Yasoda Methmali and Danusi Hansika. S.A.K. Chandrasiri was defeated on board one.

The men’s team will face Brunei in the final round while the women’s team will take on Chinese Taipei.
