SL Air force felicitates boxers

The Commander of the Air Force Air Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke promoted Leading Aircraftman MYM Dilshan and PGE Madushan, two leading SLAF Boxers to the rank of Corporal with effect from 01 September 2014, in recognition of their medal winning performance at the recently concluded Lions Cup International Boxing Championship. Further cash awards were also presented to them at a simple ceremony held today (01 September 2014) at the Air Force Headquarters.

Leading Aircraftman Dilshan enlisted to the Air Force on 18 November 2008 as an Ops Ground Tradesman and underwent four months of training at SLAF Base Minneriya. The Airman got the opportunity to represent their Inter unit championship and managed to reach semifinal stage. SLAF boxing committee having observed his techniques, tactics and fighting skills he was absorbed into the SLAF boxing pool. With training and exposure received at the SLAF pool Dilshan became a regular member of the national boxing team.

Subsequently he represented Sri Lanka at the Asian Boxing Championship in Amman Jordan, and, won the Bronze medal at the Cuban Boxing Championship 2014 and then represented the country at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. At the Lions Cup International championship, which attracted 11 foreign teams, Dilshan won the gold medal in light welter weight under 64 category. Besides he won the Best Boxers Trophy at this championship.

Madushan who enlisted in the Air Force on 11 March 2009 as an Ops Ground Tradesman also underwent four months training at Minneriya. He too competed in the inter unit boxing championship 2010 in Colombo and was selected to SLAF boxing pool considering his fighting ability and the courage he displayed at the meet. With his keen interest in the sport and the coaching facilities given by the Air Force, Madushan reached national level and represented the country against India, and then the Commonwealth Game2014. Madushan was able to win silver in light fly weight under 49 category at the Lions Cup.
