5th Annual SLT SILK Sports Awards Ceremony

The queen of netball, Tharjini Crowned Most Popular Sports Personality of the Year….

COLOMBO – BMICH: ‘During my 10-year international netball career it is the first time that I had the chance to win the Most Popular Sports Personality award at the 5th annual SILK sports awards ceremony which was held at the BMICH on 18th December’, said Sri Lanka’s most successful netball legend Tharjini Sivalingam.

The awards ceremony recognized local sporting heroes who have excelled in their respective sporting fields during the 2019.

“During my sports career I have received so many awards but this award is very special because this one was a people’s choice. So I must thank SPORTSINFO the organizers and the sponsors Sri Lanka Telecom who have done wonderful job for the fifth consecutive year. It has also earned her the title of tallest netballer on the planet.

Sri Lanka Telecom Chairman Kumarasinghe Sirisena the special guest of honour at this event said that SLT is always happy to be involved in sports and SILK Sports Awards continuously’. Annual SLT cycle race is very popular among the Sri Lankan sports lovers. But I think this SILK Sports Awards ceremony gives more value to the sports. All the leading sports personalities have got together in this event and sports stars receive recognition for their achievements”.

1996 World Cricket legend, the captain cool Hon Arjuna Ranatunga present on the occasion as the chief guest.

A veteran national sports administrator Sunil Jayaweera has been recognized with a prestigious SLT SILK Lifetime Achievement Award and he received his award from the co-head of the jury rear admiral Dr. Shemal Fernando. The SLT SILK Lifetime Achievement Awards, given every year to one sports personality, is an initiative of the SILK Jury to recognize the important role models in supporting arena on the road to their sporting achievements.

Sri Lankan opening batting hero Roshan Mahanama – one of the greatest in the game in the modern era – is also recognized as the ‘Duncan White Sports Excellence & Contribution’ award winner.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka’s promising swimmer, Mathew Abeysinghe, the SAG seven gold medalist won the ‘Outstanding Sports Personality of the year award, while Nalanda captain Laksitha Manasinghe was named as the Outstanding School Sports Personality of the year, following his records breaking performances in 2019.

The ICC deaf cricket word champions named as the team of the year at the 5th SILK Sports Awards. ICC world rank 01 cricket umpire Kumar Dharmasena was named as the most outstanding contributor for international sports.

The Outstanding Sports Scientific Publication of the Year award was won by Dr. Samantha Nanayakkara who obtained the PHD for sports phycology recently. National weightlifting coach R. B. Wickremasinghe was named the Outstanding Coach of the Year.

Veteran sports writer Dinesh Weerawansa was honoured for his services in promoting sports in Sri Lanka for the last 33 years was recognized as the ‘Outstanding Contributor to Sports Journalism’, while the ‘Electronic, Social & Digital Media Programme’ award went to SLRC Beyond the Boundries.

The Special Jury were co headed by Harsha B. Abeykoon and rear admiral Dr. Shemal Fernando.
