ICC Approves Kapugedara’s Replacement in Sri Lanka Squad

Event Technical Committee Approves Chamara Kapugedera’s Replacement in Sri Lanka Squad

The ICC has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 has approved Danushka Gunathilaka as a replacement player for Chamara Kapugedera in the Sri Lanka squad for the tournament.

Kapugedera suffered a knee injury on the eve of its side’s crucial match against defending champion India during a training session at The Oval on Wednesday.

Gunathilaka, a 26-year-old left-handed top-order batsman and an off-spinner, has represented Sri Lanka in 19 ODIs in which he has scored 420 runs and taken five wickets. His last ODI was against Bangladesh in Colombo in earlier this year.

The replacement of a player requires the approval of the Event Technical Committee before the replacement player can be officially added to the squad.

The Event Technical Committee of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 consists of Geoff Allardice (ICC, chairman), Campbell Jamieson (ICC representative), Steve Elworthy (Tournament Director), Alan Fordham (host representative), Sourav Ganguly and Michael Slater (both independent nominees).

Sri Lanka will play India at The Oval on Thursday, 8 June, and then Pakistan at the Cardiff Wales Stadium on Monday, 12 June.
