Avindra Mirando, the President of the Federation of Motorcycle Sports in Sri Lanka said the Association is greatly humbled and honoured to receive this award as this is the first time in the 102 year history of the Federation of International Motorcycling the world body for Motorcycle Sports, that Sri Lanka has ever been awarded a championship trophy. He added however this moment would not have been possible if not for 2 junior riders aged 12 and 13 who actually made our Country proud.

These young riders, Jaden and Aaron Gunawardena who just happen to be brothers, have been creating history from 2011 when they first participated at the ACRR at just 8 and 9 years of age. The determined 2 riders came through a National selection process beating riders from the Sri Lankan Forces as well as National riders twice their age and with the blessings of the Sri Lanka Federation have turned out to be the best riders of the 150cc and 250cc events.

It is a proud moment for our Country as these 12 & 13 year old boys were crowned the 2015 Champs of the Asia Cup of road racing. After participating in a 3 round championship that was held in Japan, Thailand and Taiwan. Jaden and Aaron Gunawardena once again Challenged riders twice their age, from Countries such as Japan, Thailand, India, Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia & Nepal and even beat them in their home Country and placed Sri Lanka on the map of Racing.

They did not make this journey alone. Their dad, Shane Gunawardena who is also their mentor, coach and a former National Champion groomed them to set their eyes on podium finishes and sent them back again as a team to compete at the ACRR after 4 years of strenuous practice. All this hard work rewarded this family with a gold medal for themselves and for their Country.

It is amazing as the facilities available for riders in our country are no where compared to the other Asian countries. As for now, we only have two small 1.3 km asphalt circuits which are in appalling conditions. We have no doubt that this award will shine some light on the matter and would help in terms of support required for upgrading the resources for our local riders.
