SPORTSINFO Successfully Holds Sri Lanka’s 1st Virtual Sports Awards; the 6th SILK AWARDS 2020

The presidential awards winning national sports promoter of the country, SPORTSINFO, took another giant leap during the Covid-19 pandemic in expanding its encouragement for the betterment of Sri Lankan sports in honouring athletes who demonstrated exceptional talent, determination and dedication for the sixth consecutive year with Sri Lanka’s First Virtual Silk Sports Awards 2020.

The SILK Sports Awards tributes the contribution to sports by the people through the previous year and past years.

The SILK Sports Awards is a powerful initiative to reward and recognize Sri Lankan sports stars & contributors for their efforts in keeping the passion of sports alive in the hearts of millions of Sri Lankan.

The Silk Sports Awards ceremony recognised and tributed sportsmen and women on the achievements they have accomplished in year 2020 on many categories and true contributors of sports.

The awards ceremony was held at Colombo on 22nd January virtually with the participation of esteemed guests and invitees online. Every category in sports arena was recognised at this award ceremony in order to pave more successful avenues in the sports industry.

For the first time three major jury awards given to the international contributors to recognize and appreciate their tremendous contribution to sports globally.

Awards were distributed under three major categories. Under the major award category, Sri Lanka women’s cricket team skipper Chamari Atapattu was picked as the most outstanding Sports Personality of the Year. Veteran cricket coach, Nelson Mendis was recognised with prestigious Silk Lifetime Achievement Award. Former test captain and Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene was recognized as the first Lionel Mendis SILK award winner for outstanding coaching & guidance. In addition, Sri Lanka Motor Racing Champion Dilantha Malagamuwa was awarded with the Duncan White Award for Sports Excellence & Contribution award. Atapattu who is the most successful batter in the team is the first Sri Lankan women’s cricketer to represent franchise cricket and also finished as most successful player at the recently concluded Women’s IPL held in the UAE.

“I am very happy to win this highest award which always encourages us to go forward in a cricket career. I think this is a very special moment in my life as recipient of the highest award at the SILK awards ceremony, said Atapattu.

The Jury Committee was headed by co-chairmen Rear Admiral Dr Shemal Fernando and National Sports Development Foundation president Harsha B. Abeykoon.

Sri Lankan cricket allrounder Isuru Udana was selected the most popular sport personality of the year while former Nalanda College skipper Avishka Perera was adjudged most outstanding schools sports personality of the year.

Former Sri Lankan paceman Chaminda Vaas was most outstanding Generous Sports Personality of the year while Sri Lankan sprinter Yupun Abeykoon who is based in Italy was selected upcoming sport personality of the year.

The Sri Lanka Army was honoured for making the most outstanding contribution to talent development of sports while LPL champions Jaffna Stallions team won the most outstanding team of the year award.

International cricket commentator Roshan Abeysinghe was also felicitated as was Haritha Perera who was selected as the best sports presenter. In addition ICC cricket umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge was named as the Most Outstanding Sri Lanka representation to International umpiring panel.

International Olympic Committee president Dr Thomas Bach’s leadership was recognized as the most outstanding vision to secure humanity and unity among all diversity through sports.

The Laureus Sport for Good Foundation was awarded with the SILK most outstanding contribution to help children and young people overcome violence, discrimination and disadvantage in their life through sports award while the founder of Dubai cricket museum; Shyam Bhatia was recognized as the most outstanding individual contributor to promote heritage & history of test cricket.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa was the chief guest while Suresh Subramanium the President of the National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka was the guest of honour.

Accordingly, SILK Sports Awards ceremony added more value to the sports culture in the country and almost all the leading sports personalities got together to celebrate the achievements of extraordinary sports-stars who received recognition for their outstanding accomplishments.

This was the first virtual sports awards ceremony organised by SPORTSINFO in the history of Sports in Sri Lanka.
