COLOMBO (May 19): Turning a new page in Central and South Asian regional rugby history, the Sri Lanka National Men’s and Women’s Rugby teams (The Tuskers)—who clinched a historic double championship at the inaugural Central Asia South Asia (CASA) Sevens Rugby Tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan—returned to the island this morning (19th) through the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

Throughout the tournament, which was grandly held in Uzbekistan on May 16th and 17th, both teams representing Sri Lanka displayed spectacular gameplay and absolute dominance to remain undefeated.

Crushing Opponents in the Grand Finales
In the highly anticipated Men’s final, Sri Lanka faced a formidable Indian squad. Taking control of the game right from the kick-off, the Sri Lankan Men’s team outclassed India with a massive 31-10 scoreline, carving their name as the first-ever Men’s champions of the CASA Sevens. India finished as the tournament’s runners-up.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Women’s team put on an unbelievable display of skill against a strong Kazakhstani side in their final showdown. Restricting Kazakhstan to a clean sheet (27-0) and completely shutting down their opponents, the women’s team triumphantly captured the crown.

Squads That Led the Victory
The squads that gave their utmost for the motherland to achieve this historic victory are as follows:

Men’s Squad: Led by the experienced and veteran player Srinath Sooriyabandara as Captain and Janidu Dilshan as Vice-Captain. The rest of the squad featured Chathura Soysa, Akash Madushanka, Kavindu Perera, and Kavindu de Costa, all executing a brilliant brand of rugby for the country.

Women’s Squad: Took the field under the astute leadership of Captain Charani Liyanage and Vice-Captain Sanjeewani Wijetilake. Players including Hekashani Krishnakumari, Dilini Kanchana, and Kaveesha Ishani Perera showcased outstanding performances throughout the tournament.

Official and Warm Reception at Katunayake
A special reception ceremony was organized at the Silk Route / VIP lounge of the Katunayake Airport to welcome these triumphant heroes who brought immense pride to the nation.

Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) President Pavithra Fernando, along with Darshana Waragoda, the Private Secretary to the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports (representing the Minister), were present to officially welcome the winning teams. Additionally, high-ranking officers from the Sri Lanka Army and Air Force (representing the players’ respective clubs), alongside parents, friends, and a large crowd of rugby enthusiasts, gathered at the airport.

The dignitaries and officials welcomed the rugby champions with garlands as they arrived with their championship trophies. The nation’s profound respect and official congratulations were conveyed to the players for bringing international glory to the country during these challenging times.
