Sri Lanka is set to mark a defining milestone in its sporting journey as the national team prepares to compete at the prestigious UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup, scheduled
to take place from 8th to 12th April 2026, at the Cairo International Stadium Complex, Cairo, Egypt signifying the country’s first-ever participation at a global level as a full
modern pentathlon team.

This landmark qualification underscores a significant breakthrough for the sport in Sri Lanka, which has been built from the ground up under challenging conditions. Modern
pentathlon in Sri Lanka began at a very basic, developmental level, with limited resources, infrastructure, and technical facilities. As a relatively new sport to the country, it faced numerous structural and operational challenges from athlete training pathways to access to specialized disciplines.

However, through consistent effort, strategic development, and athlete commitment, Sri Lanka has, within just eight years, transformed the sport into a competitive, worldclass
full pentathlon program, now capable of competing at the highest global level.

The opportunity to compete on the world stage has been earned through commendable performances at recent Asian-level competitions, where Sri Lankan athletes
demonstrated resilience, technical progression, and competitive promise against some of the continent’s strongest contenders.

Modern pentathlon, governed globally by the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne, is one of the most demanding Olympic sports, combining five disciplines
fencing, swimming, obstacle course racing, shooting, and running requiring athletes to demonstrate exceptional versatility, endurance, and mental strength.
Commenting on this historic achievement, Nishantha Piyasena, President of the Sri Lanka Modern Pentathlon Federation, stated:

“This is a proud and defining moment for Sri Lankan modern pentathlon. What makes this achievement even more significant is our journey from starting with very limited
resources and minimal facilities to now competing at a global level as a full pentathlon team. As a new sport in Sri Lanka, we faced numerous challenges in building awareness,
infrastructure, and athlete capability. However, within just eight years, we have been able to elevate the sport to a world-class standard.

Qualifying for the UIPM World Cup for the very first time is a testament to the dedication of our athletes, coaches, and administrators. This milestone not only elevates Sri
Lanka’s presence on the global stage but also creates a strong foundation for future Olympic pathways. We believe this achievement will inspire a new generation to
embrace modern pentathlon and push the boundaries of Sri Lankan sport.”

Sri Lanka’s entry into the UIPM Pentathlon World Cup circuit is not only a competitive milestone but also a strategic step in expanding the nation’s footprint in diversified
Olympic sports. It reflects the growing investment in athlete development pathways and signals the country’s intent to compete beyond traditional sporting disciplines.

The Federation also extended its sincere appreciation to the Egyptian Modern Pentathlon Federation for their generous support in hosting the Sri Lankan team in Egypt, including
providing essential training facilities and accommodation, which has been instrumental in ensuring optimal preparation ahead of the competition.

Further, special gratitude was conveyed to the Hon. Sunil Kumara Gamage, Minister of Sports, Sri Lanka, for his continued support in facilitating the team’s travel
arrangements, enabling Sri Lanka’s historic participation at this global event.

From a broader sporting perspective, this debut holds substantial importance. It positions Sri Lanka within the global pentathlon ecosystem, opens avenues for future
